Sierra Highway County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works
Los Angeles, CA
The County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works contracted with HKA to design passing lanes in three different locations over winding mountain terrain.
Prior to the design phase, HKA reviewed the design scope prepared by the County of Los Angeles and identified many additional critical design elements required to meet AASHTO and Caltrans design criteria for passing lanes that were not considered in the original scope.
HKA prepared a Project Design Concept Report which included additional design elements, identification of pavement rehabilitation at three different locations and involved coordinating tasks of geotechnical sub-consultants for CBR and R-value testing.
Other project elements included:
Pavement reconstruction consisted of ARHM over the existing pavement
Design of a new pavement section for the widened portions of the highway
Extension of drainage facilities
Re-striping and resigning of the roadway
Research and investigation of existing utilities and utility coordination
Topographic surveys and cross sections
