State Route 30, Segment 11 I-215 / SR 30 Interchange San Bernardino County Transportation Authority

San Bernardino, CA

HKA provided civil design and surveying services for preliminary engineering of Segment 11 of the State Route 30 corridor. When completed the new freeway consisted of six lanes and two High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

HKA was responsible for field surveying and topographic verification, assistance in geometric analysis and design of the interchanges, the design of frontage roads, hydrology analysis for six basins, drainage design, stage construction, detour design and traffic handling as well as traffic analysis.

The existing westbound Route 30 roadbed and structure through the 215 Interchange was raised in profile with a new horizontal alignment. The staging of the widening of Route 30 and widening of I-215 required coordination of bridge foundations and bridge piers as well as detailed coordination with the changing profile and horizontal alignment of Route 30.

HKA assisted in the development of the interchange geometrics. The project required intense coordination with the consultant who prepared the traffic model, Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), and San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA). SBCTA also requested new designs for traffic volumes and TI values for the corridor based on the discrepancy identified by HKA. All plans and studies were prepared in accordance with Caltrans standards.
